When you’re taking out your RV for a summer trip or even just a trip across town, the dreaded might happen. Someone could hit your trailer, you could get a flat tire, or you might even hit someone else. Because this is always a possibility: if you don’t have RV insurance, you should consider it. You already spent a lot of money on that RV of yours, so you want to protect it. In fact, in most states, it’s the law. This post contains 5 useful tips to help you find the best RV insurance.

If you’re planning on buying RV insurance, it can be an overwhelming process, and it can be hard to know where to start. You’re not alone. That’s why we teamed up with the folks over at Consumers Advocate, who did some pretty extensive research and came up with this great guide on RV insurance, and the best companies where you can purchase it.

Below are 5 useful tips to help you get started on looking for the best RV insurance.

Tip 1: Consider Your Coverage Options

Coverage is probably the most important decision when purchasing RV insurance.

The kind of coverage and the amount you should get depends on several things: the kind of RV you own, the state in which you reside or plan to visit, and whether the RV is your home, or you just take it out when you’re going on a vacation.

If you have a motor home, then you’ll need an insurance policy that covers whatever your state’s minimum liability is asking, just like car insurance.

Tip 2: Don’t Forget the Personal Belongings in Your RV

A lot of us either live in our RV or we take it out on long vacations, and we keep a lot of personal items inside. You should think very seriously about getting some coverage for those personal items. Who knows? Some of the personal items might even be more expensive than your RV.

RV insurance policies give you just that option: to cover any of your personal belongings, home treasures, or whatever else of value you have in your RV.

Even laptops, TVs, satellite dishes can be covered. Protection for the inside is something we all should consider, particularly when it’s our home. Those who are enjoying full-time RV living may have all their worldly possessions in their RV. Think about what it would mean to lose it all, and decide what you think it is worth to protect it all.

Tip 3: Car Insurance Is Not RV Insurance

You might be thinking that auto insurance will cover your RV. Well, some auto insurance policies might extend liability coverage for towable RVs, but most auto policies do not include enough coverage. RV insurance has more overall inclusive coverage, which covers most of everything.

As long as you’re purchasing insurance, you want to make sure that you’re also covered for personal injury, any type of theft, or even sudden rain or tornados on the road. RV insurance will do that. Auto insurance won’t. Once you find the best RV insurance, you should be able to sleep well, knowing that you are sufficiently covered against anything that might happen.

Tip 4: To Find the Best RV Insurance, Compare Costs

Cost is always a factor in whatever we want to purchase. RV Insurance is the same. It’s difficult to predict the exact cost because it depends on your RV, the amount of coverage you’re getting, and where you live.

However, all you have to do is your own due diligence to make sure you get the best deal possible. For example, make sure to get at least three quotes from different RV insurance companies to get yourself the best pricing.

Tip 5: Read the Fine Print

Many RV insurance policies will mention in the fine print that they do not apply if the owners are living in the unit full-time. The broker who sells you the policy won’t necessarily point this out to you, but it is crucial.  And note that the fine print may even say that “full time” means “more than 5 months a year”. So, even if you only spend the winters in your RV, you might be deemed to be full-time, and have an insurance claim denied!

In most cases, you can get around this provision by paying extra. But make sure you have it in writing.

Bottom line: as in all important documents, read the whole policy before signing on the dotted line.

Conclusion – How to Find the Best RV Insurance, Summed Up

Do your homework to understand the basics so you’re clear about the coverage you’re looking for when traveling or living in your RV.

Jot down a few questions to ask the different insurance companies so you can make a more informed decision.

Even if you just get the bare minimum, RV insurance can help you protect your motor-home, or whatever kind of RV you own.
